Recensione ROCK SHOCK

Non credo che mai il titolo di un album sia stato maggiormente azzeccato. Infatti con Chapter One: Urban Fairytales, gli Absinthe ci permettono di capire subito l’atmosfera che permea il loro primo full lenght. E’ proprio una fiaba, infatti, quella che ci propongono questi cinque ragazzi di Milano.
Un concept-album, per la precisione. Infatti Sara Fusciante (vocalist), Stefano Zuccala (lead guitar), Andrea Costantini (guitar & keyboards), Riccardo Lazzari (bass) e Mauro Mengotto (drums) è della vita di ogni giorno che ci vogliono parlare. Della frenesia ed anche, perché no, dell’amore.
L’impatto iniziale è davvero particolare. In primis, perché non vi sono solo canzoni in lingua Inglese ma anche in Italiano. Molto patriottico ma, purtroppo, il rock non è proprio il genere di musica che calza meglio al nostro amato idioma. Forse è anche per questo che sembra di passare, man mano che si procede nell’ascolto, da un concerto dei The Killers alla colonna sonora del film delle fatine Winx. Per quanto, anche quest’ultima, ha una sua buona ragion d’essere, presa per quel che è e poi, sempre di fairytale parliamo.
In ogni caso l’album si apre proprio bene. Una intro di rumori urbani seguita subito da tre pezzi davvero buoni tra cui Crystal: 3 minuti coinvolgenti, una canzone capace di catturare seriamente l’attenzione. Nella parte centrale di questo lavoro, però, le sonorità tendono un po’ ad appiattirsi e a perdere quel brio che contraddistingue le prime tracce. Peccato. Il problema, comunque, viene ovviato (grazie) alla 9 canzone: Fallin’ Down di un rock abbastanza forte, che si ascolta con molto piacere.
Le influenze che scorrono tra un assolo di chitarra ed uno di batteria sono molte. Forse perché i diversi componenti del gruppo vengono ognuno da esperienze molto differenti tra loro. Ed ecco, quindi, che si riescono ad apprezzare sfumature blues piuttosto che hard-rock e venature pop.
In definitiva?! Un gruppo che parte da una buona base. Un gruppo ancora acerbo ma pieno di ottime potenzialità. Un gruppo che, mi auguro, non si lasci fuorviare troppo dalle “costrizioni” commerciali che, a volte, possono far imboccare strade più semplici ma meno coinvolgenti ed appassionate.
Un gruppo del quale spero di ascoltare presto il secondo album.

Recensione RAVENHEART MUSIC (UK)

Absinthe (great name) are a young new wave/indie/alt rock band from Milan, Italy very much in the mould of Paramore and Hey Monday. They are fronted by Sara Frusciante who has a strong pop voice. Sadly, she has just left the band, so if anyone fancies a job? This is a collection of 13 very commercial power pop/rock songs. Favourites include ‘Something’, ‘Blind the Sun’, both of which are very catchy and feature cheesy Farfisa organ, and the ballad ‘Say’. The bonus track, the semi acoustic ‘Limpido’, has an atmospheric vibe, and I would love to see the band explore this side more. All in all a really good listen for power pop fans.

Recensione ITALIA DI METALLO

"No ragazzi, non ci siamo proprio. Pezzi non tirano, il suono non convince... e poi diciamocelo, in quanto suonare siete proprio scarsi"... Oh, sarebbe bello ogni tanto ascoltare qualcosa che non convince, qualcosa la cui recensione soddisfi il mio lato sadico... Invece questa volta mi trovo in mano un bel lavoro.
Ho girovagato un po' sul web alla ricerca di info circa questi tizi milanesi, per vedere valutare il sentimento di chi il lavoro lo ha già avuto sotto mano...
Non è piaciuto. Davvero. Voti piuttosto bassi. Leggo meglio: evidentemente c'era un'altra line up e forse si trattava di una vecchia demo. Ora mi torna.
Perchè? Perchè il cd ha fatto heavy rotation sul mio autoradio da un mese a questa parte, perchè “Watch Me Burn” l'ho messa in loop fino alla nausea... ragazzi, questa band ha diverse carte in regola per fare del bene.
Gli Absinthe propongono un sound solido caratterizzato da influenze Hard Rock, Pop e Blues, che mantengono la melodia come proprio stendardo.
Troppo leggeri? Dipende, dipende dai gusti di chi li ascolta. Io, figlio degli anni 80, non posso che apprezzare un lavoro di questo calibro. Oltretutto registrato bene, e dico BENE. Nessuna sbavatura, voci trascinanti, ottimamente utilizzate e registrate con accuratezza. Il set ritmico, mai invasivo, risulta compatto e trascinante, anche su mid tempo e su tempi più lenti.
Le qualità chitarristiche, o meglio il gusto melodico dei musicisti fa da ottimo contorno a brani di facile ascolto, che anche se talvolta sfociano nel pop, sono di indubbia qualità e piacevolezza.
E poi diciamocelo, chi se ne frega se sfociano nel pop, non siamo a fare una guerra tra generi, e le contaminazioni se sono interessanti non portano che risultati piacevoli. Ascoltate "Domani", e criticatemela. Poi ne riparliamo. Oltretutto con testo in italiano. E siamo ben distanti dalla Pausini, fave! Qualità compositiva e di arrangiamento, forse qualche pezzo tira meno di altri, ma è un album di 13 songs e la cosa è più che normale.
Ho sempre apprezzato l'uso di voci femminili all'interno di questo genere di combo, oltre al fatto che sono un assiduo fruitore di all female band ottantiane, Vixen, Runaways e successive, come Donnas o anche Crucified Barbara (che ho avuto il piacere di ascoltare recentemente in contesto live) anche se si parla di altri generi.
Ragazzi, continuate così. Anzi meglio. Il lavoro da fare ora è un altro. Prendete per il collo l'etichetta e premete per una promozione degna del lavoro svolto.
Voto? 9, perchè i dieci non si danno mai.

Recensione METALLO ITALIANO

“L’Artemisia absinthium” è una pianta medicinale nota per il suo impiego nella preparazione del distillato di assenzio, bevanda eccitante bevuta prevalentemente in passato da molti artisti. Con questa premessa mi sembra chiaro il riferimento al nome della band. “Chapter One: Urban Fairytales” uscito nella primavera del 2008, e in versione cantata solo in italiano nel 2009, è costruito su un hard rock bene amalgamato dal gruppo milanese che si fa apprezzare soprattutto per gli ottimi riff e assoli di chitarra . Diverse tracce sono molto coinvolgenti come “Watch Me Burn”, cantata anche in italiano e dal ritornello molto accattivante, la splendida dark-rock “Ramblin’ Through The City” e “Fallin’ Down” che ricorda un pò i primi Lacuna Coil. Peccato per “Blind The Sun” la più melodica dell’album perché i coretti presenti nella song lasciano un pò a desiderare, mancando di coesione tra loro; peccato poteva essere una vera top ten. Buone le tracce cantate in italiano soprattutto “Domani” meno invece “Limpido” che risulta poco incisiva. Una menzione particolare merita la splendida ballad “ Say”, dove Sara dà il meglio di sé con la sua splendida e aggraziata voce. Questo lavoro è per gli amanti del rock vero, inebriante ed eccitante come l’assenzio e di gradazione estremamente melodica, altro non serve dire solo… non lasciatevelo sfuggire.

Recensione THE SHIP MAGAZINE

Non ci siamo e non perché sono cattiva o troppo critica, è che ormai, a quanto pare, i dischi vengono fatti pubblicare con troppa facilità, con la speranza di farli diventare il nuovo fenomeno del momento. Il gruppo in questione, gli Absinthe, sono composti da Sara Frusciante, voce, Stefano Zuccala, Lead Guitar, Andrea "Kappa" Costantini, chitarra ritmica e tastiere, Riccardo Lazzari, basso, Mauro Mengotto, batteria e si presentano al “grande pubblico” con il loro primo album ufficiale intitolato Chapter One: Urban Fairytales. Prima di tutto undici tracce più due bonus tracks sono davvero troppe, tanto da non riuscire quasi ad arrivare alla fine dell'ascolto, ma per “lavoro” ho dovuto sentirlo per forza per intero. I ragazzi suonano bene, questa è l'unica nota di merito, nonostante il sound suoni come qualcosa di già stra-sentito, venendo così a noia già a partire dalla terza traccia. Molto bravo il chitarrista solista Stefano Zuccala, che con i suoi assoli ci ha donato attimi di respiro, come per esempio nella canzone ‘Like a Hollywood star’. Pessima la voce, non c'è che dire. La cantante della band infatti, Sara Frusciante, (che non è parente di Jonh) ha un timbro anonimo, stona e oltretutto ha un accento inglese a dir poco improponibile. Molto meglio e forse più adatta, a cantare brani in italiano, lenti, in stile Laura Pausini, come i brani ‘Domani’ e ‘Say’, oppure come ‘Guardami bruciare’ ultima bonus track del disco che è la versione italiana della seconda traccia dell’album. Non promuoviamo neanche i testi, decisamente troppo banali e scontati, forse proprio perché l'inglese non è la lingua madre di nessuno di loro. Ultima e forse unica nota positiva, la canzone ‘Limpido’, la prima bonus track, cantata da Andrea Kappa Costantini (almeno credo), dove Sara fa in maniera eccellente semplicemente la seconda voce. La band, a mio umile parere, dovrebbe improntare il resto dell'album su questo stile. Solo in questo modo gli Absinthe potrebbero riuscire a guadagnarsi pareri favorevoli da parte di critica, pubblico e dal popolo della musica italiana indipendente, mantenendo però anche dei brani rock, dei buoni riff e Sara come seconda voce.

Recensione METAL SIRENS

Al primo ascolto di questo "Chapter One: Urban Fairytales", primo album della band milanese Absinthe, rimasi molto deluso. Deluso non perchè i nostri ragazzi hanno creato un full leght al limite dell'inascoltabilità, al contrario, poichè pensavo e speravo in un progetto leggermente differente, vista la copertina del cd, dalla grafica fiabesca al logo stesso, raffigurante una fata stilizzata. Ascoltarlo, per poterlo apprezzare, fu l'unica soluzione.
Il gruppo in questione ci propone un rock caratterizzato da influenze pop e blues, creando un album appetibile per tutti gli amanti del rock più raffinato e leggero, che si fa ascoltare senza troppe esigenze.
Ho molto apprezzato l'idea di brani sia cantati in lingua madre, (italiano), che in lingua inglese, dando prova che l'italiano se è usato nel modo corretto, sa anche appoggiarsi su melodie più dure senza diventar banale, e a riguardo basta citare band di cui abbiamo avuto occasione di recensire in passato, come Dama ed Ephemeris.
Tredici brani, inclusa un'intro e due bonus track ci faranno danzare, piangere e riflettere per quasi quaranta minuti, regalandoci basi malinconiche e solari.
I brani che sicuramente sapranno farsi apprezzare all'istante sono "Watch Me Burn" e "Something" grazie alla carica elettrica che riescono ad innescare, oppure le bellissime "Say" e "Limpido", due ballad in grado di rincuorarci grazie alle note lente che ci accompagnono per tutto il tempo.
Un interessante debutto per questi Absinthe, l'unica cosa a cui dovranno far più attenzione in futuro è la ripetività dei brani, in quanto, nonostante questo album sia orecchiabile, tende a diventare un po troppo seriale. Per il resto, non ho nient'altro da aggiungere, se non di continuare sulla strada intrapresa, che porterà riscontri ed esiti positivi.

Recensione METAL GLORY.DE

Recensione ARTISTS AND BANDS

Molto spesso noi della critica siamo buffi.
Non me ne vogliano colleghi ben più illustri del sottoscritto, ma quando ho cominciato a documentarmi sugli Absenthe per preparare questa recensione, mi sono imbattuto anche in molte recensioni. E qui arriva il "bello": si passa da valutazioni stratosferiche ad altre molto basse, che a parere del sottoscritto, risultano solamente mortificanti nei confronti della band. Ma questa è la critica musicale, ed alla fine è il suo bello. No?

Fatta questa premessa (evitabile, forse) passiamo ad analizzare Chapter one: Urban Fairytales, debutto sulla lunga distanza di questi 5 giovanissimi meneghini per la sempre attenta ed ottima etichetta UK Division. Questo lavoro, composto da 10 tracce più 2 bonus track si articola tra un Rock (a volte Hard) di chiaro stampo melodico dove la buona voce di Sara Frusciante (nessun grado di parentela col ben più noto chitarrista dei Red Hot Chili Peppers) è il perfetto collante a basi ruffiani ma ben articolate e suonate. Meglio quando le canzoni sono in italiano dal punto di vista vocale, anche se l'opener "watch Me Burn" (cantata in inglese) già denota l'alto tasso di talento qui profuso dai nostri, ma aimè, quando si sconfina nel Pop da classifica come in "Domani" o "Like A Hollywood Star" (meglio della prima come composizione, a dire il vero) viene un pò da storciere la bocca, ma sono piccoli difetti di forma dinnanzi ad una raccolta di pezzi che mai esalta, ma si attesta senza ombra di dubbio sulla sufficienza piena.

Peccato perchè alla fine si ha la sensazioni che le potenzialità siano ancora maggiori di quelle espresse, solo che l'idea conclusiva è quello di un prodotto che divide le sue due anime tra un'alternative che poco ha voglia di strizzare l'occhio alle classifiche a refrain che invece, sembrerebbero confezionati per vendere. In definitiva, tra l'entusiasmo di certa critica e valutazioni basse, per quanto mi riguarda la verità sta proprio nel mezzo. Potrei dire consigliato a molti, ma preferisco prima rimandarvi al loro myspace ufficiale, che da la possibilità di ascoltare numerose tracce di questo "primo capitolo".

Recensione ALONE MUSIC

L’Alkemist fanatix Europe e l’Ukdivision records ci presentano una gradevolissima e dalla marcia perfettamente ingranata, gli Absinthe band hard rock di Milano, dunque italianissima la quale non sdegna affatto le sue influenze pop e blues ma sempre in chiave armonica.
La band nasce nel 2006 e risente subito di una formazione stabile e dalle idee univoche verso una ed una sola direzione, al contrario di tantissime altre che purtroppo risentono l’esigenza di affrontare continui cambi di line-up, questa volta dunque, è un vero piacere leggere tra le righe della biografia tutto ciò.

Del primo EP degli Absinthe non abbiamo alcuna traccia ma oggi parliamo di “Chapter One: Urban Fairytales”, amalgamato da un hard rock dal sapore internazionale e non, difatti l’album è composto da brani italiani e non, la preparazione lirica, la tecnica musicale, ritmica e vocale sembra delle migliori anche se non superlativa. Vi è una distinta musicalità nel mix del sound, ma non riff o preferibilmente assoli che lasciano quel qualcosa che crea la ‘canzone’ che non smette di risuonare in testa, lo stesso vale per la timbrica e lo stile della vocalist.

L’EP si apre con un sistematico ‘Intro’ che semplicemente echeggia rumori di uno sfondo all’aria aperta, forse proprio per introdurre i temi interessati dalle liriche, amore, pensieri, tristezza, abbandono, malinconia, avventure di strada e accenni di vita…  ‘Watch me burn’, presenta effettivamente il sound degli Absinthe, immediatamente è chiaro ciò che è l’effetto e l’obiettivo della band in termini musicali, la voce è tecnicamente capace, dolcemente introversa fino a sembrare timida a volte per gli accenni di acuti ma che probabilmente fanno parte di una decisione destinata a tutto l’album, grande la chitarra solista, il risultato è un pezzo semplice quanto orecchiabile ma niente che catturi una particolare attenzione.
‘Crystal’ dimostra certamente più di tutti una notevole padronanza e fantasia ritmica, riferendoci in modo particolare alla batteria, con un assolo energico ma non esemplare.
‘Domani’, pezzo italiano, non egregiamente intonato nell’intro ha un sound melodico e piacevolissimo, romantico ma non scarso di ‘hard’, anche la voce diviene più energica, meno il basso, buoni rif.
‘Something’, è una sorta di avvicinarsi ad soft power metal, questa è una sensazione in particolare che arriva dai ritornelli, dai tempi e dai cori mixati, un’ottima base, buona la fantasia della chitarra solista.

‘Like a Hollywood star’, brano energico, anche questo, non cambia di molto il ritmo rispetto agli altri, colpisce sempre maggiormente la sezione ritmica, ed il suo tocco semplice quanto ‘hard’, la voce non stupisce; in ‘Ramblin’ through the city’ non vi è presente una gran fantasia nell’uso dei falsetti o degli acuti, tutti i brani sono certamente scarsi, vocalmente parlando, di un’aggressività che potrebbe invece accendere la timbrica dolce, magari graffiare un po’ non guasterebbe, il pezzo in sé non esalta e non si distacca dagli altri, non buona la metrica.

‘Without you’ si avvicina invece a quella sorta di carattere che determina la fantasia e l’originalità associato ad un intro blues e ad alcuni istanti intermedi sposati tra l’hard rock ed il blues da una chitarra con piccoli assoli echeggiati in distorsione, ottimo pezzo.
‘Fallin down’, è il primo singolo di un altro precedente album “Absinthe”, qui riportato, non diverso da ciò che ascoltiamo tra questi pezzi, solo i pochi istanti finali colpiscono con un cambio tempo improvviso per chiudere.

‘Blind the Sun’, inizia con voce maschile dalla scolastica pronuncia senza alcun dubbio, la voce anche qui non colpisce e neanche la musicalità totale.
‘Say’, ha una melodia molto carina e romantica, anche qui echeggiano gli ‘errori’ della voce, sul tempo, sulla tonalità che non riesce a rimanere stabile nel cantato lento e dolce, meglio nel ritornello più allegro, grandissima la chitarra solista!

‘Limpido’ e ‘Guardami bruciare’ sono due bonus track, il primo non molto ascoltabile in verità, specie per l’introduzione della voce maschile, non adatta a questi brani, il secondo è il rifacimento italiano del secondo brano, meglio senza dubbio in lingua inglese, sebbene in termini generici, non comunque idolatrata da una buona pronuncia, che per linee generali e dunque anche musicali è accettabile e su cui si potrebbe adattare uno stile più ‘hard’ che possa sorprendere, nonostante la sua timbrica dolce, con acuti anche grattati e sabbiati, in chiave anche più metal.

Potrebbero crescere i rif lasciando la solista al talento che già ha per non cadere troppo nel genere più pesante e perdere la particolarità del sound che ne verrebbe fuori.

Recensione HARD SOUNDS

Combo italico giunto alla prima release, gli Absinthe si presentano sul mercato con un prodotto estremamente variegato, che partendo dall’idea di un Hard Rock melodico al limite delle sonorità commerciali si colora di tutta una serie di influenze varie ed eventuali. Si spazia quindi dal Rock alla Mtv fino al Pop, il tutto passando per sfumature di Blues come di Hard Rock e di Funky: se non si trattasse di una band italiana verrebbe il dubbio di trovarsi davanti ad una nuova direzione del Visual Rock nipponico. Interessante, anche se non del tutto riuscita, risulta la scelta di alternare italiano ed inglese per i testi; d’altra parte è noto che la nostra madrelingua risenta di forti difficoltà negli adattamenti metrici. Nel complesso la scelta non appare comunque sbagliata, solo da rifinire in alcuni passaggi. Il problema principale di questo album è la relativa piattezza su cui si assesta nella parte centrale, dopo un avvio nel complesso intrigante ed avviandosi verso un finale degno di nota. Al di là della zona di bonaccia, va detto che nel complesso questi ragazzi fanno sfoggio di una tecnica tendente all’eccellenza, sottolineata ancor più dall’eclettismo stilistico che li caratterizza. Ottima anche la prestazione della vocalist, che con una timbrica calda ed un’ottima agilità interpretativa conferisce una pregnanza non indifferente anche alle linee melodiche meno convincenti.
Come valutazione complessiva ‘Chapter One: Urban Fairytales’ non è un disco facile da consigliare, in particolare per lo stile. Sembra essere il classico disco del vicino di casa, quello che bene o male si ascolta in macchina con “l’amico che l’ha comprato” senza mai essere quell’amico. Non entusiasma, configurandosi piuttosto come un bell’esercizio di commercialità tendente alla memorizzazione di giri catchy: non avendo granchè di “esclusivo” da offrire, difficilmente andrà oltre una fetta di pubblico alquanto ristretta. Che, soddisfatta dell’acquisto all’inizio, alla lunga farà fatica a ricordarselo.

So to be honest, I have not yet heard the album, although from what I understand it is good. I wanted to speak with them to find out more so I did!

Can we first be introduced to the members of the band? And can you tell us how you guys and gals all came together?

Stefano: First of all I’d like to thank you for wanting us on your website. We really appreciate it! I’m Stefano, lead guitarist and founder of Absinthe. And here is Matt, our brand new guitarist! Absinthe was founded by me and my mate Riccardo in 2006. Since then we started writing new songs, and when Kappa joined we decided to record a full-length album. We had several line-up changes in the past, but we are sure that the new line-up will last, because, finally, we are playing with very good people, which are very good musicians as well.

Matt: I can’t do anything but join my brother Ste saying that we are really honored to be on your pages. But let’s get back to the story of the band now. Actually I met Ste a couple of years ago, thanks to his girlfriend which Is a good friend of mine… “matt I got tickets for the Absinthe gig.. you should really come to check them out, they’re really great!!! And I’m fuckin’ the guitarist by the way…” We became very close friends soon and we discovered that we have in common this huge passion for music. Then two months ago Ste proposed me to join him in Absinthe because they were looking for something new. And this is basically how new Absinthe is born. Ste lead guitar, Kappa keyboards, Ricky bass, me rhythm guitar and another ricky hittin’ drums. And we are proud to announce that the lineup is now complete with Lucky, a great great singer… You’re gonna hear her singing her ass off very soon!!! We promise!

Can you tell me about the title of the album? as I am curious. And will there be a 'Chapter Two'?

Stefano: We were sitting in the studio for the Urban Fairytales recording, it was kinda late and I came up with this idea of writing chapters of our musical career, and I thought we could have started it with an evocative title such as Urban Fairytales. As you might know Absinthe is also called La Fee Verte, that means green Fairy. So Urban Fairytales definitely was the best title ever for our debut album! About the future… of course we are planning to write new chapters. And there’s another little story behind the title: our album it’s a concept album about living in a chaotic concrete jungle as big towns are. It’s a journey through the emotions, fears and feelings that we all feel everyday. And it’s a struggle to find peace, peace that’s finally reached in the last part of the album with songs “Say” and “Limpido”

Matt: I was not in the band when the album was recorded so I cannot say anything about the title but… I can say that we’re fully working on the next chapter: we have some tunes on their way and it’s scheduled we’ll enter the studio next spring! Everybody is pretty excited about this because there’s a great feeling and u can definitely smell the vibe during rehearsals.!!! ROCKON!!!

Have you released any other records or is 'CHAPTER ONE' your debut?

Stefano: Chapter One is our first full-length, but we have released 3 EPs before of that.

And for those unfamiliar with your music, how would you describe your music, and do you have any personal faves on the CD?

Stefano: Ahah, a real hard question indeed! Our sound is a mix of several genres and attitudes. We all are coming from different experiences, so it’s a real jam of rock, pop, metal, blues… all mixed up in the Absinthe way! Maybe our brand new guitarist Matt, who has been a fan of ours, could answer to this question.

Matt: I got to tell you something… one day Ste called me: “hey man, the carrier just brought me the cds!!! Come here and check them out!!!” Well as soon I got that cd, it was on heavy rotation in my car for a month or two. I was captured by the sound, a pure mix of heavy, blended with Britpop and blues… wow!!! My fave??? “Watch me burn” of course!

Where did you record the CD, and how was the experience in the studio?

Stefano: We had the luck of being owners of a recording studio, so we homemade it. It was fun in the studio, very tiring, and very unhealthy..tons of junkfood and booze! But it’s been damn fun and we are looking forward to recording some new stuff
soon

Matt: […jeez I’m definitely dreaming it!!! ]

I understand that you now have a new line up. Would you like to tell us more and how are things working out with the new line up?

Stefano: Well. This has been the best thing in the last months. Last band’s performances had been quite bad, and songwriting had become something difficult to face. So we decided to change, and I can say that it’s been the right decision. Now everything’s going smoothly and we found the fun of playing again. Matt: As I said before, you can feel the vibe in the air during rehearsals. We’ve been playing together for just a month now, but it seems like we have been together for 5 years. We are very excited about this thing… GREAT!!!

And have any band members (past or present) been involved or are still involved in any other musical projects?

Stefano: I don’t really know anything about the past members. They went their own way, and we kept on our way.
Matt: Every musician in the world have had more than one project in his life… but in our case, we prefer concentrating on Absinthe, without being distracted by other things

And what has the media reaction been like so far to the record?

Stefano: So far there have been many different reactions. In Italy, where music market is quite blocked on some strict clichés, our sound is not fully understood yet; some like us, some hate us because of our polyhedric nature. Outside Italy we have had some very good response, and we hope we will get much more in the future.

Musically, who or what are your musical inspirations at the moment, and what/who do you listen to when you are chilling out or relaxing?

Stefano: Well, I hardly find the time to chillout or relax. I’m into rock, mostly
Queen and Guns N Roses, and metal, mostly British heavy metal or power metal. My inspiration is everyday life, with its many colours, feelings and sounds. I think my dream would be fulfilled if Absinthe were able to play good music, telling true stories of our lives.

Matt: Queen & Brian May are definitely my greatest sources of inspiration, my true love. Then Guns, Aerosmith and Bon Jovi. Oh… I was almost forgetting about my bluesy roots… Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and Clapton above all. What I use to chill out?? Ludovico Einaudi…

And do any of you have any hobbies when not making music?

Stefano: At the moment, unfortunately music is the hobby/second work. I’m going to become a lawyer, but I keep the faith and keep on playing!!

Matt: I’m an Aerospace Engineering and I’m getting my graduation (someday…), and I’m a, let’s say, decent photographer.

What band/artist would you just love to tour with and hang out with?

Stefano: Ahaha… nice question… I’d love to tour with Queen and good, old Guns N Roses. And Iron Maiden of course! I’d love to meet Gotthard too, they are great.

Matt: Queen of course. And Einaudi.

And what are your band's plans for the future regards touring, and do you have any future musical ambitions?

Stefano: As I told you we have ambitions, we’d like to go touring and play more
gigs. We’ll see what the future will bring. For sure we are going to record some more albums, then we will need a bit of luck.

Matt: Get on stage, play, back in the studio, record. Ad lib… All dressed in
engineering!!

1) Quali sono le origini della band e del nome scelto?

La band è stata fondata nel 2006 da me e dal bassista, Riccardo. Entrambi avevamo accumulato una discreta esperienza nell’underground milanese e sentivamo l’esigenza di metterci alla prova con un progetto più vario e meno stereotipato. Da lì l’idea del nome, Absinthe, che significa “Assenzio”. Il riferimento è alla bevanda alcolica, che ha ispirato molti artisti del Settecento e dell’Ottocento. La possibilità di assimilare la figura della Fata Verde al ruolo di una front girl ha fatto il resto.
Vorrei poi presentare a tutti i lettori i nostri tre nuovi arrivati: Luciana “Lucky” Fabris alla voce, Matteo “Benza” Benzoni alla chitarra ritmica e Riccardo “Skrotos” Boccassini alla batteria. Delle persone splendide e dei grandi musicisti, con i quali abbiamo la fortuna di condividere il progetto.

2) La vostra musica include diversi generi:ci sono influenze particolari che vorreste menzionare a tale proposito?

Effettivamente la nostra musica è il frutto della commistione delle molte influenze che caratterizzano il nostro modo di suonare. A titolo meramente esemplificativo potremmo citare le influenze più facilmente riconoscibili come il rock, il pop e un po’ di metal. Ma non disprezziamo nemmeno il blues e il progressive Anni ’70, anzi… ci piace attingere a piene mani anche da quel campo. L’importante è che in fase di composizione tutte queste influenze vengano omogeneizzate nell’amalgama che definisce il sound degli Absinthe.

3) Cosa ne pensate delle proposte musicali attuali?

Sono la persona sbagliata a cui fare questa domanda. Purtroppo la proposta della scena musicale odierna è a mio parere piuttosto imbarazzante. Per provare vere emozioni devo ancora affidarmi ai soliti grandi gruppi come i Queen, i Guns N Roses e pochi altri. Tra i gruppi attuali apprezzo i Muse, una grande band davvero. 

4) A quali tematiche vi ispirate per la composizione dei testi?

Non abbiamo un tema fisso, però ci piace affrontare in modo approfondito determinate tematiche. Il nostro album “Chapter One: Urban Fairytales”, ad esempio, è un concept che narra le ansie e il senso caotico che la grande metropoli impone. I pezzi nuovi invece sono più introspettivi, dedicate più al ritrovamento di se stessi e alla rinascita dopo momenti oscuri della vita. Qualcosa che attualmente ci riguarda molto da vicino.

5) Quanto pensate sia importante avere un leader all'interno della band?

Credo che sia fondamentale. Nel nostro caso la leadership è esercitata da me, Riccardo e Kappa in perfetta democrazia. Ovviamente lavorare con me e Riccardo non è sempre facile, siamo molto testardi e convinti delle nostre idee. Però non siamo solo esigenti, diamo anche molto alla band e per questi motivi credo che la nostra leadership sia accettata di buon grado.

6) Parlateci dell'aspetto live della vostra band

Abbiamo sempre concepito i live come il vero momento clou dell’attività di una band. In studio si può correggere, reincidere, riprovare. Dal vivo invece è necessario che tutto riesca il più perfetto possibile, anche dal punto di vista scenico, che all’inizio era un po’ il nostro punto debole. Ora le cose vanno molto meglio, e siamo sempre felici di vedere i nostri fan soddisfatti alla fine di un concerto. Significa che abbiamo fatto bene il nostro lavoro, ed è una situazione impagabile. 

7) Milano è una metropoli:questo elemento offre più possibilità delle altre città per gli spazi musicali?

Milano è una realtà davvero strana. Potrebbe offrire decine e decine di occasioni per suonare live ed invece molti locali stanno chiudendo, un po’ per la crisi e un po’ per la mancanza di passione del milanese medio per i concerti. Ci siamo resi conto che uscendo dalla grande città il pubblico si scalda, ha più voglia di divertirsi e di fare un po’ di casino a ritmo di rock n roll!

8) Il vostro ultimo lavoro è stato ormai presentato:ritenete che per ora esso rispecchi le vostre aspettative?

Siamo molto orgogliosi del nostro primo album, crediamo che sia un bel traguardo e che le canzoni siano tutte piuttosto valide. Purtroppo la formazione che ha inciso l’album non era però affiatata al punto giusto, e quello forse ci ha un po’ penalizzati a livello emotivo. Ma anche questo problema è stato risolto e ora siamo più convinti che mai. In conclusione siamo soddisfatti, ma siamo decisi a fare molto meglio con il prossimo disco.

9) Quali sono, perciò, i progetti futuri a cui vi dedicherete?

Innanzitutto rodare la nuova formazione, che potenzialmente è la migliore che gli Absinthe abbiano mai avuto. Ci siamo allargati, spostando Kappa alle tastiere e questo ci permetterà di aggiungere ancor più atmosfere e sfumature in chiave live. All’orizzonte c’è poi l’incisione di un EP che farà da warm up per l’incisione del nuovo album, prevista per il prossimo autunno.

10) C’è qualche messaggio in particolare che volete lasciare ai lettori di BandsTribe?

Di non mollare mai, di credere in se stessi e di rispettare la propria arte. Perché la musica, prima di essere un lavoro, una passione o altre cose, è un’arte. Ricordiamo poi che il nostro album è in vendita sia su tutti i migliori negozi online (iTunes, Napster, Nokia Music Store etc), sia in versione fisica in alcuni negozi e su ordinazione direttamente sul nostro sito www.absintheband.net .

Dammispazio: Special Live with  Absinthe, Hi guys! I have to say that one thing in your brand new album caught my attention particularly: the title,  “Chapter I: Urban Fairytales”. Who wants to explain this to the fans?

Kappa:  Actually it is very simple, we just wanted to talk about the fast and stressful life in big towns like Milan. We have decided to make a concept album about a young girl who comes to the big city from outside, and we tried to describe her feelings, fears and how she is able to face this chaotic world which is totally new to her.
Sara: Yes, Kappa’s right. And in the end the album is describing exactly what has happened to me, when I left my small hometown near Asti, to get to Milan and join Absinthe. And I can honestly say that it has been a journey for me, and the whole album is a journey through the city jungle, with songs but also with real sounds recorded directly in the city streets, until the end, when the girl comes home and hears the peaceful and relaxing backwash of the Sea again.

Dammispazio: What can you tell us about the album, and the songwriting?

Stefano: We can say that this album is the fusion of all our own personal influences, we have punk and hard-core style brought in by Kappa, hard-rock and metal from me andRiccardo, the versatility of Sara on vocals, and last but not least Mauro’s jazzy-fusion influences.
Wolfy: We usually start from  hard-rock style, then we soften it working with Sara, bringing in much more melody. It all brings to that pop-hard rock sound that so well represents us as a band.

Dammispazio: Well, the new man on drums, Mauro. How was becoming part of Absinthe?

Mauro: I found their add on the internet, I listened to the single “Fallin Down” (taken from the EP “Absinthe” 2007) and I really liked it because it’s a musical genre where the drummer is very free to express himself. So I did an audition and I joined the band.

Dammispazio: In the end, let’s ask Stefano which are the plans for the future…

Stefano:  Well…the immediate future…lets’ start saying that tonight we will introduce the album to the public and to the fans. And we all hope they will like it as much as we do.  In a half an hour  we will hit the stage and play this gig. For the future we’d love to find a label. I’d like to add one more thing: this album has been totally produced and financed by me, Riccardo and Kappa and it did cost a lot of money and effort. So we hope we could find a partner which would support us and promote us in the best way.

Komodo Rock: Milan's Absinthe are probably new to you, although they've been together for more than a year now, the band have never spoken outside their native country, this interview being their first outside of Italy.Playing a fusion of rock and melodic metal, the band have just finished work on their debut EP, so to find out more we spoke with guitarist Stefano "Zacky" Zuccala and bass player Riccardo "Wolf" Lazzari. For those that are new to Absinthe, can you give us a little background on the band?

Stefano "Zacky" Zuccala: First of all I want to thank you and KomodoRock for the chance you are giving us. I am Stefano Zuccala and I'm the guitarist of Absinthe. We were born in Milan in January 2006 and we are a rock band. The biggest peculiarity of our band is that we all come from different musical styles and experiences, so in our songs you can hear many many influences.

Riccardo "Wolf" Lazzari: As Stefano said we were born at the beginning of 2006. We began just playing rock and hard rock covers, then we started composing our own songs which are a blend of different kinds of music, from rock to punk to indie to electronic. Still we are trying to be melodic even in the heavier songs.

Komodo Rock: How did the name come about and is it related to the drink Absinthe?

Zacky: Of course it is. I personally love it and I usually drink a shot before concerts or recording sessions. But it's also connected to Degas's painting and, more in general, to the use of Absinthe in the XIX century among artists.

Wolf: Yes, I think it sounds good. And Absinthe is a drink which inspired many artists, so we hope that its power could inspire us. We also thought that its green colour would be good.

Komodo Rock: Your recently finished recording your debut EP. Can you give us a little more info about it?

Wolf: It's a blend of songs that can give an idea of our sound, although we like to experiment new ways of composing music.

Zacky: There is a little story behind our first EP. We wanted to record it last spring, but suddenly we lost our singer in a very bad way and soon after our drummer told us that he would have left Milan in late Summer. So we decided with him to postpone the session to July and we recorded only the instrumental parts. Later in September we recorded vocals with the new singer Sara Frusciante. We decided to entitle it "Absinthe" because, even if some people changed in the line-up, it's still Absinthe sound and it's still us!
Komodo Rock: Can you tell us a bit more about some of the tracks on the EP?

Zacky: There will be 4 songs in our EP. The first single released is "Fallin' Down" and I have to say that people liked it. We usually write lyrics using both English and Italian, so next single will be entitled "Senza Te" (in English "Without You"). And later on there could be a ballad, or maybe not...I don't want to unveil the future yet.

Wolf: As Stefano said there will be 4 songs. Two of these will be rock- pop. The others.. maybe a ballad or something at which we' re working..

Komodo Rock:  How hard has it been for you to get the band off the ground and get your name out there to people?

Wolf: It has been difficult. Here in Italy clubs offer few chances to bands that play their own music. The rock scenery here is not simple for emerging bands, but we' ll struggle!

Zacky: Yes! We had to struggle with some other bands to emerge, and still we are only at the beginning of the journey. For the future we hope the situation will get better and better, but we know that it won't be easy. Anyway things are now going quite well for now.

Komodo Rock: Has myspace been a big help to the band? What about other online sources?

Wolf: Yeah. Above all it helps bands to meet other musicians and gives the chance to organise shows together. Bands should cooperate and give up with stupid fights, that won't bring anything useful.

Zacky: It has for sure! We only used our official website and Myspace and it really helped us to get our name to the people and that's why we decided to publish our single first on Myspace and only later we will physically release it.

Komodo Rock: Put on the spot, which 3 bands have influenced the band the most?

Zacky: As I told you before there are many many bands that influenced us, but if had to say only 3 bands I'd say Queen, for their way of seeing music, Guns N Roses, for the energy we are trying to express, and Oasis, for their pop-rock sound. And personally I have been influenced by Iron Maiden and other metal bands.

Wolf: What a difficult question... each musician brings to the project its own influences. Personally I love metal and rock but also blues. Groups that inspire me are Rolling Stones, Ac/Dc and Manowar for their simplicity. And that's important, because often the most simple thing is also the best. Anyway I don't have any models to imitate.

Komodo Rock: Any plans to hit the road in support of the EP once it comes out?

Zacky: For sure we will hit the road, but we haven't booked any gig for now. Anyway we should start the promotion in December, when the physical EP will be out.

Wolf: And we also have to rehearse with Josh, our new drummer, before we can hit the road. We're preparing old and new song with him and thing are going well, so we will be ready quite soon.

Komodo Rock: If you could put together your dream 3 band tour, who'd you pick?

Zacky: Queen with Freddie Mercury, Guns N Roses with the old lineup and Iron Maiden

Wolf: Queen with Freddie Mercury ( I agree with Zacky), AC-DC and the immortals Rolling Stones.

Komodo Rock: What's the highest point of your career so far?

Wolf: This month has been interesting: interviews on Italian radios, an apparition on TV and now our first international interview on KomodoRock. We' re proud of this. Thank you!

Zacky: I agree with Wolf, I'd say October 2007 when, after the release of our first single, the song has been put in the rotation of some Italian and American radio stations, we have been invited to Rock TV, and we released some interviews in Italy.

Komodo Rock: And the lowest?

Zacky: When it seemed we would split up after our singer and drummer left. But we never gave up, we worked really hard and now here we are ready to rock!

Wolf: Yes, Zacky is right! We were really sad for that and we thought about splitting up. But now the line-up is strong, maybe even stronger than before, and we finally we can work seriously again.

Komodo Rock: In 12 months time, where do you see the band being, and what will you be doing?

Zacky: We are planning to record our first full length and find a good label which could promote it in 2008. And we expect to play many gigs especially, maybe we outside Italy as well!

Wolf: Yes I really hope we will record a full length album and find a good label. That would be the best thing for next year.

Komodo Rock: Other than yourselves, who do you rate as the best up and coming rock band out there?

Wolf: For what about Italy I don t know the answer. There are some interesting bands but honestly there isn' t an Italian coming band that i love so much.. a part Absinthe of course!! Ahaha

Zacky: Yeah, there are some good bands but only a few will be able to leave their mark in the History of music.

1) Ciao ragazzi!!!! Iniziamo con la classica domanda: quanto tempo fa vi siete formati e com' era il vostro gruppo, con la stessa formazione di adesso?

Ste: " Gli Absinthe sono nati da una mia idea nel tardo 2005, ma è stato solo nel gennaio 2006, cioè quando Riccardo è entrato come bassista nella band, che abbiamo capito che stava cambiando qualcosa. Poi con il cambio di batterista a maggio ci siamo resi conto che il gruppo stava diventando una cosa seria e presto abbiamo trovato Kappa, il nostro produttore e musicista factotum. Per un anno abbiamo funzionato molto bene così, però a maggio abbiamo deciso di separarci dalla cantante…presto sveleremo il nome della sostituta, e sono sicuro che non vi saranno rimpianti.

Ricky: "Come ha già detto Ste,  il progetto nasce nel 2005 con l' intenzione di suonare cover rock- hard rock. Agli inizi del 2006 gli Absinthe erano alla ricerca di un bassista e dal momento che  allora passai dalla chitarra alle 4 corde, non potei che accettare con entusiasmo la proposta di Ste di entrare a farne parte, anche perchè fu il modo migliore di riallacciare i contatti con una persona che avevo perso di vista da un po'. Diciamo che concorsero una serie di circostanze favorevoli a far si che ci ritrovassimo in qsa che ci conquistò.
Il gruppo cominciò a fare davvero sul serio quando cominciammo a scrivere canzoni proprie, anche grazie all' ingresso di Kappa, che ci spronò in tal senso; fu allora che mi accorsi che avevamo del grande potenziale e che facevo parte di qualcosa che sono sicuro ha tanto da dare... Tra non molto la formazione avrà stabilità e incideremo. Quindi seguiteci perchè vi stupiremo!

2) Avevate già esperienze musicali?

Ste: "Certamente. Ho suonato per 6 anni nei The Blizzard, un gruppo metal da me fondato nel 2000, con i quali ho avuto la fortuna di girare dal vivo e di inziare ad assaporare la scena emergente milanese. Purtroppo però la presenza di alcuni elementi meno preparati di altri ci ha impedito di crescere come avremmo voluto. Poi nel 2006 ci siamo sciolti e mi sono dedicato interamente agli Absinthe."

Ricky: "Ho suonato la chitarra assieme a Ste agli esordi dei Blizzard. Poi abbandonai il progetto e suonai con amici ma senza mai fare veramente sul serio. Questo non fece che accrescere la voglia in me di far parte di una band seria e l' occasione mi si presentò con gli Absinthe... anche se come bassista... eheh i casi della vita.."

3) Quanto suonate ai concerti che sensazioni intendete trasmettere al pubblico?
Ste: "Innanzitutto vogliamo far divertire ed emozionare il pubblico, perché la musica è principalmente un mezzo per trasmettere emozioni e stati d'animo. Stiamo poi lavorando sulla presenza scenica, per offrire anche a livello visivo uno spettacolo che sia il più possibile coinvolgente per gli spettatori"

Ricky: "Sicuramente cerchiamo di trasmettere le nostre emozioni, privilegiando sempre un rock che sia divertente e piacevole da ascoltare in primis.  

4) Ci potete dare una piccola anticipazione dell EP ufficiale che uscirà a breve?

Ste: "Con piacere! Abbiamo selezionato dal nostro repertorio 3 canzoni che possano essere il più possibile rappresentative della nostra versatilità. L'EP conterrà canzoni sia in inglese sia in italiano, con sonorità che andranno dall' hard/rock-metal classico fino al pop-rock, passando attraverso sfumature indie e addirittura blues-jazz. Diciamo che l'elemento comune a tutte le tracce sarà una particolare attenzione alla melodia, vogliamo che tutte le nostre canzoni possano colpire."

Ricky: " Vi daremo a breve un assaggio della nostra musica. Come già è stato detto incideremo tre pezzi che  non sono in grado di esprimere pienamente tutta la nostra musica (che è un mix di piu generi diversi)..però sarà comunque un buon compendio...Vi farà divertire, vi farà forse piangere e forse anche ballare... "

5) Secondo voi è difficile in questi anni che gruppi rock/metal possano diventare "famosi" o comunque farsi conoscere almeno nel proprio paese? E che requisiti deve avere un gruppo per "sfondare"?

Ste: "E' evidente che la scena musicale italiana non offre ai gruppi emergenti gli strumenti idonei per farsi conoscere, ma credo che internet, con tutti i vantaggi che offre, sia in grado di ovviare, almeno parzialmente, a questa carenza tutta italiana. Servizi come myspace e lo stesso filesharing permettono alle band emergenti di far circolare la propria musica e di farsi conoscere e, magari, di raggiungere contratti, anche con case discografiche estere. Certamente a una band italiana servono innanzitutto tanto tanto impegno, passione e una grandissima voglia di credere nel sogno più bello del mondo. Poi un po di fortuna non guasta mai"

Ricky: " Il metal è  sempre stato un genere di nicchia, soprattutto in Italia. Tuttavia negli ultimi anni è uscito dall' anonimato per offrirsi a un pubblico più ampio. Il caso più evidente è rappresentato dai Lacuna Coil, ma vi sono altre band nostrane che si stanno ritagliando un discreto spazio ( mi vengono in mente i Rhapsody). Non è certo facile riuscire a venire allo scoperto in Italia, ma questo non vale solo per il metal ma anche per tutti gli altri generi. Manca la voglia di investire da parte delle etichette su cose nuove, soprattutto alla luce del fatto che ormai la gente preferisce scaricare brani mp3 piuttosto che comprare cd. Tuttavia un band valida con tanta attività live e con diversi canali di promozione può uscire dall' anonimato.. è quello ovviamente che noi ci auguriamo e forse l' unico metodo usato un po' da tutti"

6) Diteci 3 qualità che,come band pensate di possedere:

Ste: "Credo che questa domanda sia da rivolgere ai nostri fan…direi però innanzitutto la passione, un grande affiatamento di chi compone, e una grandissima volgia di fare."

Ricky: "Senz' altro passione, costanza e soprattutto la voglia di sperimentare."

7)Quali sono i vostri gruppi di riferimento...le vostre "icone"?

Ste: "Assolutamente i Queen, sia a livello chitarristico sia a livello di immagine di gruppo. Poi gli inossidabili Iron Maiden e i Guns N Roses. E poi molti altri gruppi della scena rock e metal che mi hanno accompagnato con le loro canzoni negli ultimi 8 anni"

Ricky: "Penso che attingiamo un po' da tutto. Anche se è innegabile che l' influenza metal e rock sia la più presente. Personalmente i gruppi che più adoro sono i Manowar, i Blind Guardian e in ambito rock gli Ac/Dc."

8) E "icone" o "idoli" fuori dal panorama musicale?

Ste. "Sarebbe un elenco troppo lungo e personale. Citerei solo mia cugina Paola che non smette mai di incoraggiarmi e che mi ha accompagnato per tutta l'avventura nei Blizzard"

Ricky: "A questa domanda non sono pronto.. Ce ne sono molti. In ambito sportivo attualmente mi viene in mente Kakà. Tuttavia credo che il vuoto lasciato da Patrick de Gayardon non sarà mai colmato.  "

9) Con il computer perciò con internet,che rapporto avete? Credete sia un buon mezzo per farsi publicità?
Ste: " Come ho detto prima internet è diventato fondamentale per noi gruppi. Negli Absinthe sono io che mi occupo della promozione online, anche perché sta diventando una piccola passione per me"

Ricky: "Ho un rapporto difficile con l' informatica; però è innegabile che sia un valido strumento per far conoscere la propria musica e promuoversi. "
